There is evidence of African trade in glass beads since the 16th century, however these were regarded as high-value goods and too precious for everyday use. However as intercontinental trade increased beads have increasingly been brought to Africa from Eastern Europe and gradually become a common source of adornment and decoration in Zulu culture.

Beadwork lost its exclusive status during the reign of King Mpande kaSenzangakhona in the 1800s, when large-scale trade began. At that point ordinary people began to use geometric patterns taken from grass weaving to express themselves in colourful beaded designs, which are now icons of our culture.

We keep this art alive and have adapted these traditions to produce products suitable for the corporate market such as beaded pens and wire beaded keyrings.
